July 2025
A couple driving on Highway 1 between Nebraska City and Syracuse, Nebraska, were towing a trailer behind their truck when they swerved to avoid a collision. The trailer fishtailed, and they rolled over into a ditch. Their two dogs escaped and ran off. The couple was taken to a hospital in Nebraska City. One dog was caught right away, but the other took off, prompting Otoe County Emergency Management and neighbors to search for her. She was spotted a few times but ran off, frightened by the crash, often disappearing into cornfields where, in July, the stalks stood over six feet tall. Even a drone couldn’t locate her because the corn was too dense.
A call went out to Lost Pets of Omaha Area in hopes that our drone could locate Lola, but we decided against it, knowing from experience that cornfields are tough to search. One of the owners had just been released from the hospital, so we met them at the crash site along with a member of the Otoe Emergency Management Team. The owner had spotted Lola too, but she ran from him as well. Since we’d heard multiple sightings of her, we brought and set up a trap and trail camera. Just as we stepped out of the car, Lola appeared over the hill, only to bolt the moment she saw us. We set the trap and camera, then headed back to Omaha.
Just as we were almost home, our cellphone alert went off from the trail camera app, instantly sending us a photo. We couldn’t believe it—Loal was already in the trap! We drove for an hour back to the crash site, where a neighbor loaded her and the trap into his truck. They brought it into a garage, set her free, and the owner leashed her up and took her home.
